HDV to DVD

HDV to DVD Montreal

HDV video and audio are encoded in digital form and recorded in a number of formats.

High Definition

Conventional CRT TVs use 576 lines to display an on-screen image. Compare this with two of the more widely used HD formats, 720p and 1080i.

720p (“p” stands for progressive) is an image comprised of 1280 lines along the horizontal by 720 vertical lines (1280 x 720). It shows the whole image in a single frame – that is, progressively.

1080i, with 1080 lines along the horizontal, is displayed as two fields that are interlaced. You get a bit more detail with 1080i but the interlaced image is not as smooth as a progressively scanned one.

HD Camcorders come in 720p and 1080i flavours, and are usually able to shoot footage in just one of these formats. Whichever standard you choose, you are guaranteed footage that has to be seen to be believed. The level of detail and image sharpness will leave you wide-eyed and wondering how you lived with your old camcorder’s quality.

HD Recording Formats

HDV (High-Definition Video) was originally developed in 2003 as a joint venture between Sony and JVC, with support from Canon and Sharp.

Camcorders using the HDV recording format use one of two HD formats, 720p (1280 x 720) or 1080i (1440 x 1080).

The HDV format records to the familiar mini DV tapes using MPEG2 compression which allows a full hour of footage.

AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) was developed in 2006 by Sony and Panasonic as a next generation recording format. Unlike HDV, it features a more efficient compression process MPEG4 (HDV uses MPEG2).

AVCHD can record to Hard Disk Drive (HDD), 8cm DVD, SD Memory Card or Memory Stick.

MiniDV tapes can be used to record a high-definition format called HDV in cameras designed for this codec, which differs significantly from DV on a technical level as it uses MPEG-2 compression. MPEG-2 is more efficient than the compression used in DV, in large part due to inter-frame/temporal compression. This allows for higher resolution at bitrates similar to DV. On the other hand, the use of inter-frame compression can cause motion artifacts and complications in editing. Nonetheless, HDV is being widely adopted for both consumer and professional purposes and is supported by many editing applications using either the native HDV format or intermediary editing codecs.

Product Description:
HDV is a format for recording and playback of high-definition video on a DV cassette tape. The format was originally developed by JVC and was supported by Sony, Canon and Sharp. The four companies formed the HDV consortium in September 2003. Conceived as an affordable high definition format, HDV quickly caught on with many professional users due to its low cost, portability and image quality that is acceptable for many professional productions. Two major versions of HDV are HDV 720p and HDV 1080i. The former is used by JVC and is informally known as HDV1. The latter is preferred by Sony and Canon and is sometimes referred to as HDV2. HDV is based on MPEG-2 video, which is the same type of compression used for DVD-Video and in many TV broadcast formats. The native physical format for HDV is a MiniDV or DV cassette. Because HDV is recorded in digital form, the original content can be copied onto another tape without quality degradation.
Since HDV’s are based on MPEG-2 video, they are ready to be uploaded to your hard drive straight from the tape. At Montreal Home Movies, we can save you the hassle and transfer your recordings on HDV to DVD. Our technical equipment and software are state of the art which allows us to give you the highest quality HDV to DVD services.
