Testimonials

I am very pleased with the work provided by Toronto Home Movies in converting some family home movies from film reels to dvd, and some audio cassette tapes to CD. They were instrumental to us in preserving this terrific footage, which almost feels like you're using a time machine to witness events of the past. And the best is that these family movies will be preserved and available for future generations. I was impressed with their assistance, attention to detail, and ability to do the conversions in a good timeframe. If you are looking for a business to take care of your film mementoes, I recommend them.

Thank you for a great job, well done.

Product Description:

8mm is a motion picture film format where the filmstrip is eight millimeters wide. It exists in two main versions: The standard 8mm film (also known as Double 8mm) and Super 8. The standard 8mm film format was developed by the Eastman Kodak Company during the Great Depression and released on the market in 1932 to create a home movie format that was less expensive than 16mm.

The film spools actually contain a 16mm film with twice as many perforations along each edge. During processing, the film is split down the middle, resulting in two lengths of 8mm film, each with a single row of perforations along one edge. Thereby yielding four times as many frames from the same amount of 16mm film allowing for cost savings. Because the same length of film passes through twice when recording, the format was also known as Double 8. The frame size of regular 8mm is 4.8mm x 3.5mm and 1 meter of film contains 264 pictures. Normally, 8mm is filmed at 16 frames per second. Kodak ceased selling standard 8mm film in the early 1990s, but continued to produce the film, which was sold in independent film stores.

The most common film transfer we do at Montreal Home Movies is 8mm to DVD.
