Testimonials

I am very pleased with the work provided by Toronto Home Movies in converting some family home movies from film reels to dvd, and some audio cassette tapes to CD. They were instrumental to us in preserving this terrific footage, which almost feels like you're using a time machine to witness events of the past. And the best is that these family movies will be preserved and available for future generations. I was impressed with their assistance, attention to detail, and ability to do the conversions in a good timeframe. If you are looking for a business to take care of your film mementoes, I recommend them.

Thank you for a great job, well done.
Edward Rogers,
President, Rogers Cable.

Film

Of all the old movie film we convert to DVD, the most common is 8mm or Super8 film to DVD. With our years of experience and our unique broadcast film transfer method, we ensure you that the quality of your film is completely captured into our custom DVD. You will never have to worry about your films fading as the digital process will actually improve the condition of your footage. All your footage is adjusted for colour, sharpness and clarity. Depending on your needs we can output to DVD, .AVI, .DV, your personal hard drive, MiniDV and even as a data DVD.

Of all the film formats that we convert to DVD, 16mm is by far the highest quality and most historic. Our staff of editors and technicians transfer 16mm to DVD with the most up to date and professionally maintained projectors available to produce a world renowned quality that we stand behind. We can put approximately 2 hours of edited film on each DVD. To calculate how many minutes of 16mm, 8mm or Super8 film you have, visit the Kodak Film Calculator.

Our highly trained professional editors will use a custom direct to digital method to capture each and every individual frame, using the latest digital technology to adjust the footage for color, quality and clarity, and then finish it off with a very low compression for the highest quality DVDs. We will also remove film leaders and unviewable footage and place reel markers to help you identify each reel.

So if you have a collection of 8mm, Super8 and/or 16mm films that you would like to transfer to DVD then give us a call. One of our specially trained representatives is always available from 10am-6pm from Monday to Friday and 10pm-5 Saturday. Or email us at info@montrealhomemovies.com. There are always at least 4 people available nearby to return your questions quickly and concisely.

The process:
Your film is recorded directly into one of our custom designed computers. Once your footage is completely uploaded one of our professional editors will manually go through your footage frame by frame where they would remove any splicing errors, black spots, and create individual reel markers to identify each reel. Every frame of your footage is analyzed for sharpness, color and clarity. Corrections are made if needed. If you plan to edit the footage and have asked for an uncompressed version of your footage on MiniDV, Digital8, or to your external hard drive, we will output the footage accordingly. To produce your DVD we manually adjust settings to optimize your DVD compression. Where our competition is using low quality stand alone DVD recorders, every DVD is converted to uncompressed AVI and QuickTime source files then to MPEG-2 video and Dolby® Digital audio, we manually optimize the DVD compression. Because we take the extra step of uploading all your footage directly into our computers, we can easily create customized authored DVDs. Authoring DVDs gives you the additional flexibility to create detailed menus within your DVD project.

note: many, many of our customers plan to edit their footage in the future. PLEASE do not believe anyone who tells you that editing from a VHS tape, or from a DVD is a good idea. Would you edit a photograph from a photocopy? If you are not sure, call us!! 866 559 1163 anytime.

How to get started?

First, you have to determine what you want to be transferred. If what you want transferred is a film, then it’s most likely going to be 8mm, Super8, or 16mm.

Second, download our Order Form and give us a call if there are any questions that you may have. One of our specially trained representatives is always available from 10am-6pm from Monday to Friday and 10pm-5 Saturday. You can also email us anytime at info@MontrealHomeMovies.com. There are always at least 4 people available nearby to return your questions quickly and concisely.

Custom Editing
Each film is uploaded to a timeline so that we can remove any splicing errors, black spots, digitally adjust the color and finally add a beginning and end point. In many cases where there are a lot of films, we can also add music from each year that film was taken and separate the films with a title page to clearly define the location and/or special event. With an authoring DVD tied into this, it makes an enjoyable gift for family and friends. If you are currently not in the Montreal, Quebec area or live in Toronto, Ontario, Miami, Florida, Buffalo, NY, or unable to travel to our location, we can upload your footage to the internet for viewing. Edits can be sent to us and your finalized footage then processed. Please call to confirm the cost.
