Product Description:
In 1979, Philips and Sony had an idea to change the way people viewed technology. At around that time, a lot of technological advances were being made and the audio devices were no exception. The two companies were led by two prominent members, Kees Immink and Toshitada Doi. Using prior research of laser technology and optical discs that have been started by Philips in 1977, they dove further into the idea and created a compact disc standard (the Red Book) in 1980. In 1982, the Compact Disc finally hit the market at a Philips factory in Germany and took the community by storm, with the title; The Visitors (1981) by ABBA. In less than 2 months, CDs and CD Players were released in Japan, and then into the United States in the following year. Eventually, the costs of CDs and CD players declined and slowly it climbed the popularity ladder as they were ever easier to obtain. The release of the CD was a revolution in digital audio technology and sometimes is referred to as “The Big Bang“. The technology was eventually adapted and expanded to encompass data storage (CD-ROM), write-once audio and data storage (CD-R), rewritable media (CD-RW), video compact discs (VCD), Super Video Compact Discs (SVCD), PhotoCD, PictureCD, CD-i, and Enhanced CD. CD-ROMs and CD-Rs remain widely used technologies in the computer industry. The success of CD’s is evident when looking at the volume of sales: In 2004, worldwide sales of CD audio, CD-ROM, and CD-R reached about 30 billion discs. By 2007, 200 billion CDs had been sold worldwide. Standard CDs have a diameter of 120 mm and can hold up to 80 minutes of uncompressed audio (700 MB of data). At Montreal Home Movies, we use CD’s as an output medium for all kinds of media formats.
